STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue put to work in New Lynn

When VMD Group began work on a five-home residential development in New Lynn, Auckland, the team needed a structural flooring product that would be straightforward to handle and install across the project.

The development involved replacing one existing home with five new standalone residences. VMD Group, which works across residential developments including townhouses and standalone homes, selected STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue structural flooring for the build.

For business owner Divyaraj Vaghela and his team, the 800mm-wide panel format proved to be a practical advantage on site.

“The 800mm-wide panels are easier to move and position, and the size suited the joist spacing,” Divyaraj said.

What is STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue?

While STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue is relatively new to the New Zealand market, it has been trusted on building sites in Australia for more than 50 years.

YELLOWtongue is a 19mm high-performance particleboard flooring panel designed for residential and commercial construction. Manufactured to precise standards for a secure fit, the panels can be installed over 450mm joists and features a tongue-and-groove profile that helps adjoining panels fit securely together.

The panels also feature a pre-marked fixing pattern to help guide installation, along with wax-impregnated surfaces and sealed edges for added protection during construction.

STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue is manufactured to AS/NZS 1860.1 and is CodeMark certified for use in New Zealand, providing builders with confidence that the product meets the requirements of the New Zealand Building Code.

A straightforward installation

Across a multi-home development, ease of handling can make a noticeable difference to the installation team. At 800mm wide, the panels are easier to carry and position than many larger-format flooring sheets commonly used in New Zealand.

The panel dimensions also suited the joist layout on the New Lynn project, helping the VMD Group team minimise unnecessary cutting and keep the installation moving.

“The tongue-and-groove system made the panels easy to fit and install,” Divyaraj said.

Installation footage from the project shows the team carrying, positioning, cutting and fixing the panels across the timber-framed development. It provides a practical demonstration of how YELLOWtongue performs in real building conditions and how the 800mm panels can support easier handling on site.

Following a positive experience on the New Lynn project, VMD Group would be happy to use STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue again.

“We’d be happy to use STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue again on future multi-residential projects.”

For New Zealand builders considering an alternative structural flooring solution, the New Lynn project provides local proof of a product already established across thousands of Australian homes.

STRUCTAflor YELLOWtongue is available through Bunnings Warehouse stores in New Zealand.
